Ava Berkofsky is a two-time Emmy-nominated Director of Photography, who has lensed multiple award-winning films, television, documentaries and short form work. Born in Wales, UK, and raised in the mountains and cities of California, Berkofsky is currently a US based Cinematographer and filmmaker.  Ava's most recent Emmy nomination for Outstanding Cinematography (2020) was for HBO’s INSECURE. Berkofsky collaborated with Director/EP Melina Matsoukas to create the distinct look and visual language of the show. Additionally, Ava’s directing debut on the show was also nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Cinematography in 2020.

Berkofsky’s award-winning feature credits include A24’s SHARE, directed by Pippa Bianco, which won the U.S. Dramatic Special Jury Award at Sundance (2019) and was nominated for the Caméra d'Or at Cannes. FREE IN DEED, directed by Jake Mahaffy earned Ava a nomination for Best Cinematography at the Independent Spirit Awards, among other international accolades. Most recently, Ava completed production on The Sky is Everywhere, directed by Josephine Decker and produced by A24 & Di Novi Pictures. Other films have premiered at festivals including TIFF, AFI, Rotterdam, Sundance and SXSW, twice winning a SXSW Special Jury Prize for shorts SEQUIN RAZE, directed by Sarah G. Shapiro and SHARE (short), directed by Pippa Bianco.

Ava has also created and executed looks for shows on Netflix, Stars, Amazon, HBO, Hulu and PBS. Short form commercial clients include Nike, Puma, Netflix, P&G, Spotify, Redbox, Vogue and LACMA. 

A BFA in photography and fine art from the School of Visual Arts in NYC, combined with years of shooting social issue documentary projects inform a textured approach to cinematography and filmmaking, always looking for the nuance of subjectivity, time and place. 

When not shooting, Ava can usually be found laying in the grass and cloud gazing with a magical five pound chihuahua named “Tiny”. Berkofsky also has an MFA from AFI.
